Musings,

Reintroducing: Kenyan Belle

Oh, how strange it feels to be typing words onto this platform once again. It’s been over a year since I published a recipe on this blog and almost three years since I published a non-recipe post. (I can almost hear the tut-tut from here)

I’ve got a whole load of excuses. I’m choosing to write them down, to face them and see them as nothing but excuses.

Let’s see: there was finishing my final year of my LLB and going through the harrowing process that is the dissertation; there was the brief period of hopefulness, confusion and anxiety that besets any new graduate–not knowing what the future holds coupled with the nerve-wracking process of searching for a job as my peers started to take their Linkedin seriously and career updates popped up all over my newsfeed; there was the start of my first real job and all the learning and excitement that came with it–and quickly discovering the dire need of acquiring work-life balance skills; and lastly, there was the mother of all traumatic experiences, dare I even say its name, KSL, the Kenya School of Law for those who might be unfamiliar with the institution and its terror-filled 10 months (make that 16 months, courtesy of the Pandemic) which culminated in the dreaded Bar Exams infamous for triggering depression, panic attacks and even IBS–a story for another day.

In the grand scheme of things, there’s one word for all that went on up there: life.

Let’s be honest for a second. Those excuses up there weren’t the real problem. The real problem is (and has always been) fear. Fear of what? Fear of opening up, of being vulnerable, of being judged, of people not liking what I write, of making a fool out of myself…the list of fears is endless.

But then I had a moment of inspired realisation; my fears are valid. They all could actually come true.

Then what?

My life will still go on, writing will still bring me joy (hopefully), sharing my life and experiences will still bring me joy. With that in mind, not writing because of fear sounds like a pretty irrational decision, doesn’t it?

So…this is me. A little bit older, a little bit wiser, a little bit more daring, ready to bare it all (relax, no sob stories in the near future, or maybe there will be? Who knows! This new restraint-free writing feels limitless!) and share the good, the great, the bad and the ugly experiences I get to partake in this world and guess what, I’m bringing you with me.
