Musings,

Baby, Do Your thing!

Heya guys,

It’s a Sunday afternoon and I’m feeling equipped to impart a bit of wisdom. (My uncle made a joke today when I informed the family that my gums were swollen and paining because my wisdom tooth is growing; apparently the pain is the price of acquiring wisdom. ??)

So I’m going to talk about finding and accepting your ‘thing’. I have many ‘things’, we all do. Something we repeatedly like to do that’s specific to us. You could call it a habit but I don’t think it gives the same vast effect and meaning as the word ‘thing’. It could be as deep as always giving food to that homeless man who sits round the corner of your usual supermarket to something as simple as always starting your day listening to a Kanye West song (old Kanye, not Yeezy-you can try fight me on this but The College Dropout, Late Registration and Graduation were something else. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy deserves an honourable mention as well). What matters is that it’s your thing.

What’s one of my things? Wearing maroon, a lot of it. It’s a colour that gives me comfort and makes me think of happy things like Morocco, which is on my travel bucket list…and wine which I don’t really need to give a reason why I love it.

Sometimes we’re embarrassed about our thing and that’s okay too, e.g. for me, that’s scheduling at least once a month, an extremely sad or soppy romance movie marathon where I can just get all the feels out and stop my “gangsta façade” for a day.

Lately, I’ve been struggling with wanting to be and do everything. In the context of this post, I’ve basically been wanting to have many “things”. It’s just something that seeps into your life and you don’t even realize you’re doing it. It’s probably prompted by this era of “you can have it all”, propagated thoroughly by social media. On the other hand, seeing your friends do their thing can lead you into thinking you should also be able to do such things. You cannot, it’s just not possible. And if you are constantly looking to do everything, you lose focus on the things you actually have and can do in your life. Again, I’ll take myself as an example—as anyone wanting to make an actual impact would. Thinking about other things makes me lose focus on what I really love to do and want to improve on, that is, cooking, writing and dressing up (I can’t tell you how much I enjoy calling it dressing up instead of modelling or Instagram fashion blogging. I find it more raw and a closer description of what it really is. And sometimes you just need to reduce things to their innocent, childlike meanings. Also, it’s become such a cliché to use the term ‘fashion blogger’…it’s akin to Slay Queen. So just let me continuously seek for ways to go against the norm and not be a cliché. ?

I find myself having to remember this all the time. I’m hoping this will serve as a reminder to you as well, to evaluate your own strengths in your life. What you want to keep, work on and perfect; what you don’t want to keep, stop deceiving yourself and direct your efforts onto something else worth your limited time on this earth.

Let me leave you with a Pinterest quote, as they’re always so inspiring.

Watch carefully, the magic that occurs when you give a person just enough comfort to be themselves.

Lovely thoughts. I like your selfless and honest writing..No afraid to be the example..rare thing.

I need to hike more and accept that this is my thing, far removed from my cycle of family and friends. And to be ok with that. It’s MY thing.

We need revisit Dr. Njino for exactly where the wisdom tooth(teeth) or Sirach wisdom may be sighted on or about your person. No screaming will be allowed(!). But sighting aside, this is deep and authentic glimpse of Ivy. I know there is more from this fountain…..keep sharing.
